A little dab will do you in
August 24, 2009  |  spiritual growth

I walked out to our pool yesterday only to find it turning green. I began to check the obvious stuff. I checked the chlorine dispenser. It was full. I attempted to turn on the pool filter. Nothing. Just a click and a hum. After some intense troubleshooting in the World’s largest library of Google, I found the problem. It was a small little $10 part called a “capacitor”. Basically, the capacitor provides a delay in the energy which allows the motor to start. The motor then runs the pump which circulates the water which filters the water which keeps the pool clean. My problem could be traced back to a small little seemingly insignificant part.

Sin works the same exact way. A small little seemingly insignificant sin causes our entire life to break down and malfunction.

Sin is highly concentrated. A little dab will do you in.

A little bit of pride. A little lie. A little deception. A little impure thought. A little gossip. A little bite of the forbidden fruit. That’s exactly what Satan wants. He wants us to be caught off guard by the impact of sin. He wants you to think that a little dab will do you, rather than do you in.

Paul tells us to examine ourselves. In other words, we need to test ourselves. Do a complete diagnostic systems check. Don’t overlook the small areas, for that is where the problem usually lies. Christ died in weakness to give us the power to overcome sin.

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! Psalm 139:23-24
